Over 300 YFC members will take to the stage at The Albert Hall in Llandrindod Wells and over the week 2,500 members of the public will watch the performances.
It is a highlight of the YFC calendar and attracts a varied audience from across Radnorshire and its neighbouring counties.
Clubs spend nearly 6 weeks in their local village halls practising their performances ready for their big night. All members aged 10-28 compete and it’s the one competition that helps the members of the clubs all bond as they spend a lot of time with one another.
Radnor YFC also holds a ‘One Plus’ and ‘Time to Shine’ competition. The One Plus competition is an 18 & under competition where a maximum of 6 members can perform anything they like on stage such as a comedy sketch, a magic act, a dance or a musical performance. The ‘Time to Shine’ is the same competition but for 28 years and under.
Entertainment
An Entertainment may include straight singing, singing with movement, dancing of any kind, drama, sketches, humour – either visual or spoken (though anything of a dubious nature would be penalised) – magic or conjuring, instrumental performances, mime etc. – the list is endless. But, like making a cake, the ingredients must be weighed and balanced, mixed and blended to make the whole performance.
A play is not to be included in Entertainments. (A play can be defined as following a story from beginning to end).
Pantomime
The competition shall take the form of a pantomime, which may be either excerpts from a pantomime* or the team’s original work.
*For guidance only “Pantomime is a dramatic entertainment loosely based on a traditional fairy tale in which the activity is carried on with the help of singing, dancing, clowning, topical jokes and music, in which the performance of that action is conducted by certain stock roles, usually ‘principal boy’ (hero) acted by a woman, and the ‘dame’ acted by a man.”
Drama
Drama is a form of storytelling used to show the strengths and weaknesses of human nature.
Teams may choose either a single act from a full-length play, excerpts from a full-length play or a complete one-act play.
